Personality Description:
Augustus Waters is the male protagonist of The Fault in Our Stars. At first he demonstrates himself as laid back and cool, but he does emphasize his ego as he discusses his fear of oblivion and his desperate need to be remembered as a hero in the cancer support group. Though he is still supportive of his best friend Issac. Later, after he meets Hazel Grace Lancaster we see Augustus turn into a gentleman. He begins to leave his stubborn life behind to have fun through adventures such as his trip to Amsterdam. Overall Augustus is a popular favourite among the female fan base. In the movie he is portrayed by Ansel Elgort.

Characterization Analysis:
Quote: "It's a metaphor see, you put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing."
If you were to ask anyone within the novel what they remembered most about the infamous Augustus Waters there would be one common answer; his metaphor. Throughout the novel we see Augustus use the metaphor of a cigarette to take control over his own life. Due to the fact that he lives with a side effect of cancer (dying) and the fear of oblivion, he is determined to remain in control no matter the situation. It has been proven fact that cigarettes will kill you. By placing the cigarette in his mouth but not lighting it, he is able to satisfy his desperate need for control. From this we are able to see several characteristics of Augustus; his audacity, determination, drive and originality. He demonstrates audacity because he proceeds to defy the odds in his own unique way. Instead of letting the cancer consume him, he is controlling the cancer indirectly. As Augustus speaks at Isaac's support group he tells stories of his fear of oblivion. In a desperate attempt to escape this feat and be remembered as a hero, Augustus is determined to conquer the road less travelled. SImilar to determination Augustus has drive. Not only is he drastically pursuing a goal, but he also carries purpose along with him through his tragic journey. This leads me to my final point, originality. All his life Augustus has been filled with stories of hopes and dreams as well as being surrounded by individuals who proceeded to let their lives revolve around cancer. But, this isn't the life he wanted to live. Breaking away into his own path Augustus pursues a life of reality, adventure and solitude. That's when he meets Hazel Grace Lancaster. As the novel progresses he lets go of his childish thoughts such as oblivion and heroic deeds and begins to live his life alongside Hazel with endless adventure.

Hazel Grace Lancaster
Age: 16 years old
Gender: Female
Birth Date: September 29th
Hometown: Indiana, U.S.A.
Relatives: Mr. & Mrs. Lancaster (Mother and Father)
Occupation: Student
Appearance:
Height: Average
Weight: N/A
Hair Colour: Dark Brown
Eye Colour: Green
BMI: Underweight
Relationships:
In a relationship with Augustus Waters
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lancaster
Bestfriend of Kaitlyn
Friends with Isaac and Patrick from the Support Group
Rivalry with Peter Van Houten
Characteristic Description:
Hazel is the main protagonist in the novel. She has a very monotone personality, and does not like showing her emotions around people she is not very comfortable around. She shows signs of depression, for her daily routine is very repetitive and basic; until she meets Augustus and we see a complete change in her personality. She is much happier, yet much more reliant on Augustus but we don't really see that until his death. She has a time of instability, and this portrays her unbalanced emotions, which is common for a patient with cancer. Her character has one of the most interesting personalities we see in the novel.
-Snit
Characterization Analysis:
Quote: "I'm a grenade."
Hazel Grace Lancaster spent her teenage days in her living room watching America's Next Top Model with her mother. Instead of going to school, hanging out with friends and having fun she would rather live in solitude. The reason for such decisions is her inescapable fear of being a grenade. Due to her thylakoid cancer Hazel will not become close with anyone because she doesn't wan't to be the reason for their emotional pain. Hazel believes that it is only a matter of time before she must leave the ones she loves and she desires to keep the casualties to a minimum. In this simple 3 word quote we are able to sum up Hazel's character. She is selfless, concerned and mature, but she is also a pessimist. In her attempts to preserve the emotions of the people she adores we can observe her selflessness as well as her concern. Similar to Augustus, Hazel does not wish to pursue the typical life of a cancer patient. She takes no interest in the charity, constant reminders, endless questions and the false hope. Instead she inhibits a mature outlook on her own life. She will accept her fate, believe in what is the truth and life her life without the impact and opinions of others. Unfortunately her decisions may have some real aspects, others are more of pessimistic opinions. As the novel progresses Hazel's eyes are opened slowly as she begins to let people in, starting with Augustus Waters. Augustus is able to unlock new doors in Hazel's eyes as they travel to Amsterdam on Augustus' wish to pursue Hazel's dream of ending An Imperial Affliction. Eventually Hazel is able to open her arms to other characters as well when she finally realizes through her parents words that it is better to live a life of company than suffer alone. Most importantly she learns that others do not wish for her to be alone, they are there for her no matter what happens. Though it is too late to realize she should have cherished the time she spent with Augustus, but at the end of the novel we see Hazel blossom into a brand new person.

Isaac
Relationships:
-Good Friends with Augustus Waters
-Friends with Hazel Grace Lancaster
-Former girlfriend is Monica
Appearance:
-Blonde Hair
-Large Glasses
-Blind
Born: N/A
Home: Indiana, U.S.A
Relatives: Graham (brother)
Occupation: Student
Status: Alive
Cause of Death: N/A
Personality Description:
Isaac is the supporting character of Augustus Waters in The Fault in Our Stars. Before he loses his sight through surgery we see Issac as a carefree character who is in love with feeling on top of the world. Despite his condition he progresses forward optimistically. Though, after his girlfriend Monica breaks up with him prior to surgery we see the once present light removed from Isaac's eyes. He spirals into a dark depression of hatred and heartbreak. He changes from one extreme of drama to the other. Isaac's character provides comedic relief within the novel. In the movie he is portrayed by Nat Wolff.
~Camryn Bonn
Characterization Analysis:
Quote: "Come here so I can examine your face and see deeper into your soul than any sighted person could."
Throughout the novel the reader is always excited and intrigued when Isaac makes an appearance. His character is comedic, yet we feel sympathy for him. At the start of the novel Isaac is only partially blind, but later we are told that the cancer has spread and he must lose his entire sight. After his girlfriend, Monica breaks up with him because of his surgery we see Isaac's character change. In the beginning Isaac shows characteristics of hope, optimism and freedom. We suspect that this is due to his relationship with Monica. Then his surgery is performed and through not only this quote, but through his actions as well Isaac becomes over dramatic, theatrical and pessimistic. When Hazel arrives at the hospital to visit Isaac post surgery he jokes by saying the quote above. In an attempt to overcome the despair he feels, Isaac tries to take a more humorous approach. Though, we can still hear the heartbreak in Isaac's voice due to the writing style John Green uses. Isaac not only keeps his own happiness in mind but he tries to lighten the mood by cheering Hazel up. His wit and selflessness also inflicts sympathy in the reader making Isaac a favourable character within the novel.

Peter Van Houten
Peter Van Houten
Age: N/A but he is an elderly man.
Gender: Male
Birth Date: N/A

Relatives: Anna Van Houten (his late daughter)
Occupation: Retired Author, Alcoholic
Appearance:
Height: Average
Weight: N/A
Hair Colour: Dark Brown
Eye Colour: Brown
BMI: Overweight
Relationships:
Rivalry with Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters
Ex-Secretary is Lidweij
Divorced (wife is unknown)
Father to late Anna Van Houten
Characteristic Description:
Peter Van Houten is considered the antagonist in the novel. He is a retired author who has found a renewed passion for life through alcohol. He was the reasoning of Hazel and Augustus' trip to Amsterdam and their visit with him changed their perspective on the book and their own lives. However, even though Peter is not the most friendly person in the world, he does have some justification for his actions. His daughter passed away at a young age and his wife left him. He has no other family, so of course he is going to need something to rely on. After Augustus' death, he realizes the mistakes that he has made and genuinely seems like he wants to make a change with his life. He has the most concealed personality in the novel.
-Snit
Characterization Analysis:
Quote: "We pour Scotch into a glass and then call to mind thoughts of water, and then we mix the actual Scotch with the abstracted idea of water."
Even though Peter Van Houten is only presented halfway through the novel, author John Green is able to deceive us many times on his true personality. At first we are given the impression from his letter responses that he is a cooperative and regal man. As Hazel and Augustus travel to Amsterdam the scenery and description of their visit leads us to believe that their visit with Peter will go smoothly. Unfortunately we are given a false perception because when we finally meet the notorious Peter Van Houten we see him for who he truly is. At the time of their meeting Peter states the quote above. In this quote he demonstrates the characteristic of originality. I would like to focus on this characteristic to describe Peter because this essentially sums up his character. In terms of the idea of life the quote is stating that we live our lives with are dreams in mind, but sometimes we get so caught up in dreaming we don't materialize them into reality. Instead we live content with our simple thoughts. This exemplifies his abstract way of thinking. To display his opinions he is able to uses abstract items around him in an on spot metaphor. Typically an author would compare life to more directly related concepts, but in his prime Van Houten pursues the path of difficulty. In the end he reaches his goal successfully. Due to the fact that Van Houten is an author we do expect him to be creative in his thoughts. Through his love of scotch he is not only able to display his dominance in the literature field, but he also manages to make himself an unfavourable character. By the end of Hazel and Augustus' meeting with Peter we have completely lost interest in the affair and would rather be left in mystery than deal with Peter any longer. This brings me to my second characteristic, arrogance. The high degree of his language as well as his evasiveness gives the impression he believes he is superior to all other characters in the novel. Finally he turns out to be the rival of protagonists Hazel and Augustus which in turn leads the reader to dislike him.

Status: Dead
Cause of Death: Cancer
Personality Description:
Anna Van Houten is the main character of the novel An Imperial Affliction. AIA is a story that as opposed to highlighting the light and airy characteristics of cancer it portrays the more realistic approach. Unfortunately the book ends mid-chapter and remains unfinished until Hazel visits the author in person. At first he is unwilling to cooperate, but gradually information is given as to the ending of the novel. Anna may be the main character, but she is also the daughter of the author of the novel. We suspect that the novel ends due to Anna's death.

Main purposes for including the character in the book & personal comments:
• to enhance the distant relationship Van Houten has with other people
• to enhance the plot and theme of “love triumphs over struggle and hardship” (Augustus and Hazel still rekindled their love and overcame Van Houten’s and Lidewij’s emotional outbreak)
• Lidewij brought some excitement and added extra drama to the chapter where Van Houten was being uncooperative.
• The multiple “faces”/personalities of Lidewij that was seen made me realize that no person can have just one personality when they are exposed to different people and experiences.

Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster
Mr. Lancaster
-Mr. Lancaster is the bread winner of the family (has a job).
Age: +40 year old
Gender: Male
Home: Indiana, U.S.A.
Occupation: Works for Morris Property Inc.
Birth date: N/A
Appearance:
Eye color: Blue- green
Hair color: Brown
Height: N/A
BMI: Normal
Relationships:
• Father to Hazel Grace Lancaster
• Husband to Mrs. Lancaster
• Friends with Mr. and Mrs. Waters
Characteristics:
Very emotional
• Cries a lot when there is a lot of conflict in the family
• I.e. when hazel called herself a grenade, he was clearly distraught and we can infer that this incident may have reminded him of the memories when Hazel was extremely sick.
Genuinely concerned about Hazel
• Made sure that she was always happy with her life.
Somewhat Laid back (when it comes to rules and what Hazel can do)
• Allows Hazel to go to Amsterdam (gives the final conformation).
• Permits Hazel to go to Augustus’s house whenever she pleases.
Main purposes for including the character in the book & personal comments:
• To strengthen the relationships in the Lancaster family.
• To enhance plot and theme.
• Mr. Lancaster was a very likeable character among the readers as he was portrayed as the “perfect father figure” because of his constant concern for his child and laid back personality.
• I noticed that he was portrayed as the weaker partner in his relationship (opposed the traditional gender roles of a man-the man is always stronger). I believe that this enhanced the novel a lot because Mr. Lancaster seemed like he would be a strong and protective figure before Hazel got cancer. This change in his personality/role in the family shows how largely cancer affects the surrounding family members.
Mrs. Lancaster
-Mrs. Lancaster stays home and takes care of her daughter Hazel constantly.
Age: +40 year old
Gender: Female
Home: Indiana, U.S.A.
Occupation: “Student” (working towards getting degree so that she can become a social worker like Patrick)

• Did not permit her to go to Amsterdam without a trusted guardian.
Supportive
• Always encouraged Hazel in not letting her cancer define her.
• Constantly gave her emotional support, and encouraged her to attend the cancer support group.
Patient and Strong willed
• She has constantly provided her child with whatever is needed to get rid of the cancer and has gone through many tribulations where she thought she was about to lose her child (these experiences gave her the strength to face any problems as she has been through worse)
• I.e. when Hazel didn’t have enough oxygen and when fluid filled hazels lungs.
Main purposes for including the character in the book & personal comments:
• to enhance hazel’s relationship
• enhance the theme of “there will always be someone there for you”.
• Mrs. Lancaster was also a very influential figure in Hazel’s life, her constant concern and caring for Hazel made her very appealing to the readers (her supporting role in the book provided the readers with a sense of satisfaction that hazel is not being neglected because of her sickness).

Patient and Strong willed
• She has constantly provided her child with whatever is needed to get rid of the cancer and has gone through many tribulations where she thought she was about to lose her child (these experiences gave her the strength to face any problems as she has been through worse)

Mrs. Waters
Relationships:
- Mother of Augustus Waters
- Wife of Mr. Waters
Appearance: N/A
Born: N/A
Home: Indiana, U.S.A
Relatives: Augustus Waters (son), Mr. Waters (husband)
Occupation: Mother
Status: Alive
Cause of Death: N/A
Personality Description (for both characters):
Mr. and Mrs. Waters are the parents of Augustus Waters. Though we do not see many appearances by them throughout the novel they add an entire dimension. They are very carefree and laid back parents. Augustus is able to go and do anything he pleases. An example is when Augustus and Hazel travel to Amsterdam even though Augustus is very sick with Osteosarcoma (Hazel is unaware of this fact at the commencement of the trip). When Augustus' cancer returns we see them progress into caring, supporting and loving parents. In my own opinion I would have liked to see more interaction between Augustus and his parents before his death. I receive the impression that Augustus isn't the most fond of his family even though they give him unconditional support. I believe Augustus truly had a strong relationship with his parents even though it was not distinctly prominent within the novel.

Kaitlyn
Age: 16 years old
Gender: Female

Occupation: Student
Birth date: N/A
Appearance:
Eye color: Blue
Hair color: Blonde
Height: N/A
BMI: Normal
Relationships:
• Hazel Grace Lancaster’s Pre-cancer best friend (Hazel now describes their relationship as "awkward" since Kaitlyn would feel "self-conscious" while talking to her- Green 47)
• Considered popular in her school
• Claimed to have met Augustus
• Has a boyfriend (Derek)
Characteristics:
Bubbly personality
• Likes to talk a lot and gossip (typical girly girl).
• When she was conversing with Hazel she was mostly talking about her life.
Mature for her age
• Hazel describes her as “…an extremely sophisticated twenty-five-year-old British socialite stuck inside-a-sixteen-year-old-body.”
• She acts as if she knows all and sees all-very intellectual.
Distant/shallow
• She did not try to maintain a lot of contact with Hazel after she found out about her cancer.
• She wasn’t very considerate of Hazel’s situation when she was talking about Augustus (“I’d ride that one-legged pony all the way around the coral”~Green, 94 was what she commented after Hazel mentioned Augustus).
• A majority of her comments where on her increase in popularity, and discreetly emphasizes how much better her life is compared to Hazel’s.
Main purposes for including the character in the book & personal comments:
• Kaitlyn served as a method of showing the reader a bit of Hazel’s life Pre-cancer.
• Kaitlyn was also used to emphasize the huge differences between herself and Hazel (FOIL), as well as their lifestyles (normal lifestyle vs. cancer lifestyle).
• At first Kaitlyn seems very savvy and like-able, but her narcissistic traits and distant relations with Hazel make the reader reconsider their initial perceptions.

Caroline Mathers
Relationships:
-Former girlfriend of Augustus Waters
Appearance:
-Brown Eyes
-Long Straight Black Hair
-Round Face
-Round Nose
-Italian
-Wide Hipped
Born: N/A
Home: Indiana, U.S.A
Relatives: N/A
Occupation: Student
Status: Dead
Cause of Death: Brain Tumour
Personality Description:
Caroline Mathers is a background character within the novel. The main purpose of her character is to emphasize not only Hazel's personality traits, but also demonstrates the aspect of personal choice. Caroline let her tumour consume her from the inside out. She refused to life her life to the fullest and instead retreated to a dark world of hatred and deceit. Augustus' description of her character late in the novel depicts that she was not the nicest of people. Frankly Augustus felt pity for her because she was unable to see past what was in front of her. She had 2 choices become the cancer itself or live as if it never happened. I believe that many characters within the novel may have had negative feelings towards Caroline, but also wished only the best for her.

Monica
Relationships:
-Former Girlfriend of Isaac
Appearance:
-Brunette
-Tall
-Curvy
Born: N/A
Home: Indiana, U.S.A
Relatives: N/A
Occupation: Student
Status: Alive
Cause of Death: N/A
Personality Description:
Monica is also a background character in the novel. We do not receive much information on her personality, but due to her actions we can interpret ourselves. She believes that by breaking up with Isaac before his surgery it will be less crude then breaking up with a blind boy. When in reality the motives set behind her actions are the only crude display. In my opinion I believe that Monica is unworthy of being Isaac's partner. Anyone who is unable to deal with a simple bump in the road is not fit to handle a relationship, especially with something that is out of her control. There is nothing wrong with Isaac in anyway. Just because he can't see doesn't make him any less of a human being. In the novel we see Monica portrayed as a rude and insensitive character. Among the readers she is an unfavourable character.
